Product Review: Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill
A few months ago, I purchased the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill
This coffee grinder is the 3rd one I’ve owned since I started grinding coffee beans at home about 15 years ago.
The first grinder was a simple blade grinder. When I was ready to upgrade to a burr grinder, I kept it and now use it for grinding spices.
The first burr grinder I bought worked great for a number of years, but the power button broke a few months ago. After reading tons of reviews on Amazon, I decided to go with the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill.
The reviews are actually just fair overall, but I found that unless you are willing to spend a lot more than I wanted to spend, all of the grinders get mixed reviews.
If you want a grinder to perform like the high end grinders, than you need to plan to spend over $100. If you are like me, however, and simply want good ground coffee without expecting the world, this $50 burr grinder is an excellent choice.
This coffee grinder is very easy to use. Simply fill the bean hopper with your favorite beans and put the lid back on. Set the coarseness that you prefer and the number of cups you want, and then push the start button.
This grinder, like most of them, is pretty loud. Expect something about as loud as a blender, so if you have a really light sleeper nearby, you might want to grind up the beans the night before.
One of the big complaints that you get on all of the moderately priced grinders is that the container that the ground beans drop into is made of plastic, not glass. The result is that the ground beans have a tendency to cling to the plastic. The way to avoid a mess is to tap the container on the counter lightly before you remove the lid.
Tapping the container knocks almost all of the coffee to the bottom of the canister. You’ll also want to carefully remove the lid and place it ground side up on the counter, or simply hold it until you pour the ground coffee into your filter and can put the lid back on.
As you can see from the picture above, almost all of the coffee easily dumps out. There is no need to wash the container between uses, just put the lid back on and slide it back into the burr grinder so it is ready for the next morning.
My ONLY complaint on the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill is that the ground bean container should be easier to slide back into place. You have to hold it at exactly the perfect angle to get it to slide onto the track. I found this really frustrating the first week since my prior grinder wasn’t this touchy. That said, I got used to it fast and now I don’t even think about it as I put it back together when I’m finished.
Would I buy this coffee grinder again?
Absolutely.
For the money, I don’t think there is a better product out there for grinding coffee beans to be used in a drip coffee maker at home.
I’m not an espresso drinker. I might feel differently about this product if I wanted finely ground coffee for an espresso machine…but I have no way to comment on that since I don’t drink espresso.
UPDATE: When this coffee grinder suddenly stopped working only a year after I purchased it, I changed my mind about getting the same one again. I ended up purchasing a Mr. Coffee grinder at about the same price and have been very happy with everything about this model since my purchase.
